Consultation & collaboration
Demonstrate Knowledge and Skills in Consultation and Collaboration
Introduction
“Consultation and collaboration entails knowledge of varied methods of consultation, collaboration, and communication applicable to individuals, families, groups, and systems and used to promote effective implementation of services. This domain allows one to demonstrate skills in consulting, collaborating, and communicating with others to design, implement, and evaluate services and programs as part of a systematic and comprehensive process of effective decision making and problem solving that permeates all aspects of service delivery” (NASP Domains Blueprint, 2000)
Reflection
Consultation and collaboration in schools is key to having successful programs and interventions in place. While at internship, I participated in team meetings as well as the Child Study Team department meetings and observed the lines of communication between the different mental health professionals, teachers, and specialists in order to see what types of communication work best and which do not. Certain issues that arise in schools can be solved more directly, while others need to be handled more delicately. Figuring out how to communicate student’s needs in an understanding and effective manner is a key skill to acquire.
I have consulted with individual teachers regarding the students I see for counseling as well as observed my supervisor consulting with teachers on an as needed basis. During my internship I have worked with a special education classroom teacher to implement a classroom wide behavior program to help decrease disruptive and disrespectful behavior in her classroom. Throughout the course of our consultation I met with her weekly in order to monitor the progress and make changes as needed. The consultation was successful in decreasing the disruptive behavior in her classroom. My case study for this consultation process has been included as evidence.
As part of my coursework while in practicum, I had to opportunity to consult with one of the guidance counselors about a student who had school refusal due to high levels of anxiety. Together we explored the problem, came up with a plan to collect data on her attendance, and monitored her placement in the schools stabilization program. I have included my evaluation of the students progress along as evidence as well.
