School wide practices to promote learning
Demonstrate Knowledge and Skills in School-Wide Practices to Promote Learning
Introduction
“School-wide practices to promote learning involve knowledge of individual differences, abilities, and disabilities and the potential influence of biological, social, cultural, ethnic, experiential, socioeconomic, gender-related, and linguistic factors in development and learning. One will demonstrate skills in developing and implementing practices and strategies that create and maintain effective and supportive learning environments for children and others” (NASP Domains Blueprint, 2000).
Reflection
Having effective practices that are in place throughout the school is important for the student’s learning environment. School-wide practices speak to an understanding of the individual needs of the students in the school. Having a supportive learning environment can change how the student learns, responds to intervention, and succeeds in school. While at my internship, I have been a part of the RULER committee as they implement the evidence-based social emotional program within the school. I have utilized the materials from the program with my individual counseling case in order to help generalize what he is learning through his classroom regarding mood meters and think-about-it worksheets. I have included a reflection on my participation on the RULER committee as well as how I incorporated the skills into my individual counseling case.
At my practicum in Newton, I participated in the planning and implementation of Stand Up Day, which is a school wide initiative to create a positive school climate and stand up to bullying. I was involved the planning of the day as well as co-leading activities that took place throughout the school. I have attached a letter from the school principal thanking me for my participation.
