Demonstrate Knowledge and Skills in Interventions and Mental Health Services to Develop Social and Life Skills
Introduction
“Interventions and mental health services to develop social and life skills demonstrates knowledge of biological, cultural, developmental, and social influences on behavior and mental health; behavioral emotional impacts on learning and life skills; and evidence based strategies to promote social-emotional function and mental health. One utilizes skills in using assessment and data collection methods and in implementing and evaluating services that support socialization, learning, and mental health” (NASP Domains Blueprint, 2000).
Reflection
Social and life skills can be enhanced with intervention and proper mental health services. While at my internship, I took on a more active role in the planning and co-leading social skills and social language groups. I was able to bring new activities and strategies to the groups and help to create a safe environment for the students to practice the skills they are learning. I collaboratively worked with the speech and language pathologist as well as my supervisor to teach students new skills in our small social skills groups. We were also able to push in to the general education enrichment periods in order for the student’s in our groups to practice and carry over the skills we are learning in small group. Due to the success of our sixth grade social skills group, the students were able to meet their goals and “graduated” from the group. At my internship, I have also had the opportunity to support students through weekly counseling sessions in order to teach coping strategies to be more successful in school. I have included a case study on my work with a student who presents with severe anxiety in school and at home.
At practicum in Newton, I co-ran and ran counseling groups that focus on social skills with students, which allowed me to improve upon both my individual and group counseling skills. I worked with the students who are in the Bridge program as well as students on the Autism Spectrum in counseling sessions throughout the year in order to help them build social and life skills. I also had the opportunity to work with a variety of students who are struggling with anxiety and need coping strategies. I have included a case study on testing a student on the Autism Spectrum.
