One will portray skills in providing services consistent with ethical, legal, and professional standards; engaging in responsive ethical and professional decision-making’ collaborating with other professionals; and applying professional work characteristics needed for effective practice as school psychologists, including respect for human diversity and social justice, communication skills, effective interpersonal skills, responsibility, adaptability, initiative, dependability, and technology skills” (NASP Domains Blueprint, 2000).
Reflection
Upholding the legal, ethical, and professional standards is a key focus of growth in the field of school psychology. By observing my supervisor, I have gained a better understanding in how to handle legal and ethical situations that arise within the school setting and how to conduct myself in a professional manner. I have continued to do what I can to start gaging an understanding and putting into practice in my own life ethical and professional standards. Since I opted to do an internship out of the state of Massachusetts, I took it upon myself to read through the New Jersey Special Education Law and Special Education Code. Doing so has helped me get a better understanding of how the special education system runs in New Jersey and has kept me informed throughout the school year.
I have continued to conduct myself in a professional manner now and expanded my previously acquired skills working in a school setting. Through supervision, I have received feedback and guidance in ethical and professional manners. When situations arise I have received guidance in how to best handle them, for instance sitting in on bullying investigation interviews of students. Also, I consulted with my supervisor regarding any ethical dilemmas that have arisen during my time at my internship.
As part of my learning and growth, I regularly attended professional development opportunities offered within the district, such as going to Child Study Team departmental meetings. I have included my professional development credit as evidence of my regular attendance, it can be found under the professional development tab of my portfolio. I have also attended state association workshops and other continuing education and professional development events throughout the school year.
While I was a practicum student in Newton, interns and practicum students were invited to attend seminars once a month. I have regularly attended these meetings in order to expand on my professional self. I have included a reflection of these seminars as they have provided me with many opportunities of growth in the field of school psychology.
