Demonstrate Knowledge and Skills in Preventative and Responsive Services
Introduction
“Preventative and responsive services demonstrates knowledge of principles and research related to resilience and risk factors in learning and mental health; services in schools and communities to support multi-tiered prevention; and evidence-based strategies for effective crisis response. One will learn skills in promoting services that enhance learning, mental health, safety, and physical well-being through protective and adaptive factors and in implementing effective crisis preparation, response, and recovery” (NASP Domains Blueprint, 2000).
Reflection
Having an understanding in preventative and responsive services for students, aids in their mental health and learning. In my internship, I was involved on the committee for the RULER program, which is an evidence-based social-emotional program that has been implemented within the intermediate school. As part of the committee, I worked closely with those in charge to implement the program as a preventative measure for students by participating in meetings and events throughout the school year. I also have brought the tools I have learned through the RULER program in my own preventative and responsive services with the student’s that I work with. I have included a reflection on my experience on the committee and how I have been able to incorporate the program in my own practice.
As part of the preventive and responsive services at my practicum site in Newton, I had the opportunity to observe the struggles of a system change within the school. The assistant principal of Student Services has been trying to implement and pilot Tier 1 and 2 programs within the school. I have also observed my supervisor respond to emergency responsive situations regularly as they arise. I have included a reflection based on these experiences.
