Family-School collaboration services
Demonstrate Knowledge and Skills in Family-School Collaboration Services
Introduction
“Family-school collaboration services entails knowledge of principles and research related to family systems, strengths, needs, and culture; evidence-based strategies to support family influences on children’s learning, socialization, and mental health; and methods to develop collaboration between families and schools. One will gain skills in designing, implementing, and evaluating services that respond to culture and context and facilitating family and school partnership/interactions with community agencies for enhancement of academic and social-behavioral outcomes for children” (NASP Domains Blueprint, 2000).
Reflection
Family involvement in schools and their child’s education can have effect how successful the student is in school. By being involved in school events and developing relationships with families in the school, a school psychologist can form connections the parents and school officials can utilize to benefit the child. In my internship I participated in IEP meetings and parent initiated meetings. As part of our initial evaluation planning meetings in New Jersey, I have had to opportunity to talk with parents and conduct interviews based on their concerns for their child. At internship, I have also participated in parent conferences when needed for students who are on my supervisor’s caseload. I have observed how to get parents more involved in the educational process and how to be flexible, yet assertive, when working with parents. I have included an initial evaluation of a middle school student where I worked closely with the parents as well as the student’s teachers to meet her educational needs.
